The Environment Around You Is Changing the Environment Within You
You think about what you eat. You exercise. You may take supplements, prioritize sleep, and pay attention to your hormones and metabolic health.
But there is another part of your health you may rarely think about:
The environment your body is living in every single day.
The air you breathe. The water you drink. The food packaging you touch. The products you put on your skin. The plastics, pesticides, fragrances, pollutants, and other exposures that have quietly become part of modern life.
You don't have to see them for your body to interact with them.
And here's the piece we're missing:
Your external environment can change your internal terrain.
Environmental exposures can influence inflammation, oxidative stress, hormone signaling, the gut microbiome, and the total burden your body has to process every day.
But exposure is only half the story.
Because two people can encounter similar exposures and respond very differently.
The other half of the equation is the health of the body receiving them.
Exposure matters. But resilience matters too.
And that is the detox conversation I want us to be having.
Not how to live in a perfectly "clean" world. Not which seven-day cleanse to buy.
But how to reduce the burden coming in while building a body better equipped to handle what inevitably gets through.
You Can't Completely Control Your External Environment
We live in a world our biology wasn't necessarily designed for.
Every day, we encounter substances through our air, water, food, household products, personal-care products, and the materials we bring into our homes.
Plastics. Pesticides. Air pollution. Fragrances. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Heavy metals. And, for some people, environmental exposures such as mold.
We cannot eliminate all of them.
And I don't want you trying.
The goal isn't to become afraid of your environment. It's to identify the exposures you can reasonably control and reduce the total burden where it matters most.
Improve your indoor air quality. Filter your drinking water when appropriate. Choose whole foods more often. Avoid heating food in plastic. Be thoughtful about the products you use every day.
You don't need to replace everything in your house tomorrow.
Start with what you use most often.
Your Internal Terrain Matters Just as Much
Your body already has sophisticated systems designed to process and eliminate compounds it doesn't need.
Your liver transforms them. Your kidneys filter your blood. Your gut and microbiome participate in metabolism and elimination. Your bowels move waste out.
But these systems don't operate in isolation.
If you're constipated, what your body intended to eliminate can remain in the gut longer.
If your microbiome is disrupted, metabolism and elimination can change.
If you're nutrient depleted, the biochemical pathways involved in detoxification may not function optimally.
And if you're chronically inflamed, underslept, metabolically unhealthy, and living in a constant stress response, you've changed the environment in which all of these systems are trying to work.
This is why detoxification isn't simply about avoiding toxins.
It's about building resilience.
Your age is fixed. Your internal terrain is not.
Lower the Load + Support the Exit
This is the simple equation I teach my patients:
Reduce what's coming in + improve what's going out.
On the "coming in" side:
- Improve indoor air quality and ventilation.
- Filter drinking water.
- Eat whole foods more often and reduce heavily processed and packaged foods.
- Use glass or stainless steel, particularly when heating food.
- Be thoughtful about personal-care products, fragrances, and household cleaners.
- Address meaningful exposures such as mold, contaminated water, or occupational exposures at the source.
Then look at the other side of the equation.
Are your bowels moving regularly?
Are you eating enough fiber and drinking enough water?
Are you moving your body?
Are you getting enough protein, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients?
Is your gut functioning well?
Are you sleeping?
These aren't glamorous detox strategies.
They're the foundation.
Before worrying about binders, complicated supplements, or aggressive cleanses, make sure the body's basic pathways of elimination are working.
Because trying to mobilize more without effectively moving it out misses the point.
Why This Matters in Midlife
This conversation becomes even more relevant as we move through midlife.
Hormonal changes influence body composition, gut function, insulin sensitivity, metabolism, and where we store fat. Meanwhile, some environmental chemicals can interfere with normal hormonal signaling.
Add more visceral fat, less muscle, constipation, poor sleep, chronic stress, and changes in the gut microbiome, and something important happens:
The external environment may not have changed dramatically.
But the internal terrain has.
This also connects directly to inflammaging.
Environmental burden can contribute to oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling. Chronic inflammation can then make the internal terrain less resilient.
Gut dysfunction, metabolic dysfunction, hormones, inflammation, and environmental burden aren't separate conversations.
They're interconnected.
Detox Doesn't Require Perfection
You will never create a toxin-free life.
Neither will I.
And trying to do so can become its own source of stress.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's lowering the total burden while improving your body's resilience.
Swap the plastic bottle you use every day before worrying about an exposure you encounter twice a year.
Think about the air in the bedroom where you spend eight hours every night.
Drink filtered water. Eat real food. Build muscle. Move. Support your gut. Keep your bowels moving. Sleep.
Then go deeper when your history, symptoms, exposures, or testing suggest you need to.
This isn't about fearing the modern world.
It's about recognizing that your body is in constant conversation with it.
Change the Terrain
Instead of asking:
What detox should I do?
I want you asking:
What kind of environment am I asking my body to function in every day?
That means the environment around you—and the environment within you.
You cannot control every exposure.
But you can lower the load.
You can support the exit.
And you can build a more resilient internal terrain.
Lower the load. Support the exit. Change the terrain.
Ready to Change Yours?
Inside RENEW: Elevated Foundations, we don't approach detoxification as an isolated cleanse or a list of things to fear.
We look at the whole terrain—gut health, nutrition, metabolic health, stress, environmental burden, and hormones—and work through the foundational pieces in the right sequence.
Because your body already knows how to detoxify.
Our job is to create an environment that allows it to do that work well.
